I believe that having forgotten our history, it might help to remember that thirteen nation/states banded together to create a central government with defined and limited powers that could represent them in the international arena and to facilitate trade between the nation/states.

Today we say (United states) of America, meaning the states form a single entity subordinate to and controlled by the federal American government. Perhaps if we thought of the USA as the States united of America meaning fifty States have united to form America we might begin to understand the mindset of our Founders. (Please note that my use of capitalization is intentional).

I doubt many people today understand the concept of federalism. Most think it means a central government that controls all subordinate units. However, it’s correctly defined as “a system of government in which power is DVIDED between a central authority and constituent political units.” Furthermore, under our constitutional system the central government gets its power and authority from the units, i.e., States and the people, that formed it. If it fails to perform or violates its mandate, those forming groups retain the right to change or even eliminate it.
